Part 107 Aeronautical Decision-Making and Crew Resource Management
Updated October 27, 2026
The Operations section of the Part 107 test includes how remote pilots make safe decisions and work with their crew. These questions are often about recognizing a hazardous attitude or a personal risk. Here’s what to know, followed by free practice questions.
The five hazardous attitudes
| Attitude | Sounds like | Antidote |
|---|---|---|
| Anti-authority | “Don’t tell me what to do.” | Follow the rules; they are usually right. |
| Impulsivity | “Do something quickly!” | Not so fast. Think first. |
| Invulnerability | “It won’t happen to me.” | It could happen to me. |
| Macho | “I can do it.” | Taking chances is foolish. |
| Resignation | “What’s the use?” | I’m not helpless. I can make a difference. |
IMSAFE: are you fit to fly?
Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue, Emotion (or eating). Check each before every flight.
Alcohol and drugs
Part 107 applies the same alcohol rules as other aviation: do not act as a crewmember within 8 hours of drinking alcohol, while under the influence, or with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.04 or more.
Crew resource management (CRM)
CRM means using all available resources, including the visual observer and any other crew, through clear communication, a pre-flight briefing and agreed roles. Before flight, brief the crew on the plan, the emergency procedures and how you’ll communicate.
Free decision-making practice questions
-
A remote pilot thinks, "Accidents happen to other people, not me." Which hazardous attitude is this?Answer: ABelieving accidents won't happen to you is the invulnerability attitude. The antidote is "It could happen to me."
-
What is the antidote for the macho attitude?Answer: DThe macho attitude tries to prove oneself by taking risks. The antidote is "Taking chances is foolish."
-
How long must a remote pilot wait after drinking alcohol before acting as a crewmember?Answer: BThe rule is at least 8 hours "bottle to throttle", and also no flying while under the influence or with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.04 or more.
-
What does the "F" in the IMSAFE checklist stand for?Answer: CIMSAFE stands for Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue and Emotion (or eating), a personal checklist before every flight.
-
A pilot feels pressure from a client and says, "What's the use? They'll be upset anyway." Which attitude is this?Answer: BFeeling that nothing you do will make a difference is resignation. The antidote is "I'm not helpless. I can make a difference."
-
What is the main purpose of crew resource management?Answer: CCRM uses all available resources, including clear communication with visual observers and other crew, to manage risk and make good decisions.
-
What is the antidote for the anti-authority attitude ("Don't tell me")?Answer: BThe anti-authority attitude resists rules and procedures. Its antidote is "Follow the rules. They are usually right."
-
A pilot rushes into a flight without checking the weather: "Do it quickly!" Which hazardous attitude is this?Answer: CImpulsivity is acting quickly without thinking. Its antidote is "Not so fast. Think first."
-
The PAVE checklist helps assess risk in which four areas?Answer: DPAVE stands for Pilot, Aircraft, enVironment and External pressures, a way to identify risks before a flight.
-
What is situational awareness?Answer: ASituational awareness means understanding the drone's status, the environment, other aircraft and people, and how they may change during the flight.
-
What does the "I" in IMSAFE stand for?Answer: BIMSAFE stands for Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue and Emotion (or Eating), a personal checklist before acting as a crewmember.
-
Which scanning technique is recommended for spotting other aircraft?Answer: CEffective scanning uses short, regular eye movements, pausing on each roughly 10-degree area, because the eyes detect objects best when they stop moving.
-
A remote pilot is taking a new prescription medication. What should the pilot do?Answer: DRemote pilots must not operate if they know or have reason to know a physical or mental condition, including medication effects, would interfere with safe operation.
-
Which is a sign of fatigue that should stop a flight?Answer: AFatigue slows reactions and reduces attention, raising the risk of errors. Don't fly when fatigued.
-
Under crew resource management, how should a visual observer report a hazard?Answer: BGood CRM relies on clear, prompt communication among crewmembers so the remote pilot in command can act.
